Milestones

2000

National CacheCard Company (St. Louis, MO) founded to develop card-based electronic benefit transfer (EBT) and higher education systems, utilizing Smart Card technology, abandons higher education market.

CyberMark LLC (Columbus, OH), founded in 1992 as a private systems integrator of smart card systems for universities and corporate campuses, expands its owners to now include First USA Bank, in addition to Student Loan Marketing Association, The Battelle Institute, and Huntington Bancshares.

Robert Huber Associates (Phoenix, AZ) an international consultancy founded in 1991 to provide Campus Card consulting services to colleges, universities, community colleges, healthcare institutions and closed corporate campuses, moves its company headquarters to Scottsdale, Arizona.

College Enterprises, Inc. (Canoga Park, CA), changes name of company to iCollege Inc. (formerly CEI) and card division to Campus Card Systems (formerly Special Teams).

The CBORD Group, Inc. (Ithaca, NY) introduces "Odyssey PCS" (Privilege Control System), Windows NT-based, ODBC compliant database, and utilizing TCP/IP communications.

Student Advantage, Inc.(Boston, MA) founded in 1992 as a national student membership and retail discount network, introduces "SA Cash" to the higher education community in conjunction with their campus card program.  This provides schools with a new option to expand the scope of their on-campus debit card program to include selected off-campus local merchants via an outsourced marketing service (i.e. recruitment, installation, revenue sharing).

iCollege Inc. (Canoga Park, CA), provider of Campus Card Systems (formerly CEI Special Teams), announces its intention to acquire AT&T CampusWide Access Solutions (purchased from Harco Industries Inc. in 1994).

Blackboard Inc. (Washington, DC), an e-Learning Internet infrastructure software company, announces its intention to acquire iCollege CampusWide Access Solutions (formerly AT&T CampusWide Access Solutions) and Campus Card Systems (formerly CEI Special Teams).

2001

Blackboard Inc. (Washington, D.C.), an e-Learning Internet infrastructure software company, acquires iCollege CampusWide Access Solutions (formerly AT&T CampusWide Access Solutions) and Campus Card Systems (formerly CEI Special Teams).

Schlumberger, Ltd. (France), a global technology services firm and parent company of Schlumberger Inc. (and formerly Schlumberger DANYL of Moorestown, NJ), purchases Sema Corporation and forms SchlumbergerSema, an international provider of smart card-based products.

IVI/Checkmate Corporation (Roswell, GA) becomes a privately-held, wholly-owned subsidiary of Ingenico (Ontario, CANADA). Ingenico is a leading provider of smart card-based secured transaction products and systems. IVI/Checkmate Corporation is the parent company of Debitek Holdings LLC (Chattanooga, TN), a provider of cashless (off/line) payment systems utilizing magnetic stripe and smart card technologies.

Mr. Gary Lorenz, General Manager of the Diebold Card Systems Division (Cypress, CA), retires after 29 years in the campus card industry. Gary Lorenz and John Darjany, founders of Amsec Company (Long Beach, CA), developed and installed the first standalone electronic card access system at California State Polytechnic University (Pomona, CA). It was the first known card-based system (low coercivity proprietary magnetic stripe technology) for colleges and universities to include "Meal Plan" application control. Amsec Company was acquired in 1974 by R.D. Products (Rochester, NY) which later changed its name to Griffin Technology Inc. in 1983. From the launch of the Series/3 system until the Series/5, the system was known in the campus card industry by its "VALI-DINE" trademark. Griffin Technology Inc. was later acquired in 1996 by Diebold Inc. (Canton, OH).

CyberMark LLC (Tallahassee, FL), a systems integrator of smart card systems for universities and corporate campuses, becomes responsible for marketing, selling and supporting all SchlumbergerSema smart card-based products for the campus market, including all current SchlumbergerSema campus customers.

The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) introduces the first "IP addressable" card reader for campus card access systems.  The technological advance eliminates the need for a traditional card reader internal building loop or network, and allows a card reader to be connected directly to a college/university fiber network system.

The Claremont Colleges ™ consortium (Claremont, CA) begins to phase-in a coordinated campus card program at its 5 undergraduate (i.e., Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Scripps College) and 2 graduate schools (Claremont Graduate College, Keck Graduate Institute).

2002

CyberMark LLC (Tallahassee, FL), founded in 1992 as a private systems integrator of smart card systems primarily for colleges and universities, reorganizes to focus on promoting its chip card products in shopping malls and automobile dealerships.  As part of the corporate reorganization, Mr. Bill Norwood retires as Vice Chairman after joining the firm in 1996 as Vice President of New Business Development.

Mr. Bill Norwood, a pioneer in the U.S. smart card technology, retires from CyberMark LLC after 30 years in the higher education industry.  Bill worked for 20 years with Florida State University, serving as Director of Computing until 1990.  He was responsible for linking the first public university to link a campus card with a bank.  In 1990, he developed the Card Application Technology Center, and independent business enterprise operation, to manage the new "FSU Card" and its card applications.  In 1994, Bill introduced a chip (1 KByte contact) to the "FSU Card" to replace the magnetic vending stripe.  In 1997, he developed an application to utilize the "FSU Card" in pay telephones.  Under his leadership in 1998 he facilitated a joint venture (Florida State University, CyberMark LLC, First USA), to introduce a MasterCard with a chip which could be utilized at concessions at the FSU Doak Campbell Stadium and at local merchants.  Later that same year, he developed an interface to utilize the "FSU Card" in cellular telephones.

CyberMark LLC (Tallahassee, FL) ceases operations and transfers all marketing and support responsibilities to ITC Systems (Canada) for its smart card systems at colleges and universities in North America.

The University of Vermont (Burlington, VT) becomes the second known college or university to "share" its host campus card access system with another "non-related" school, Saint Michael's College (Burlington, VT), a private institution.  Initially, cards were produced by each campus (separately) and cardholders utilized their respective campus applications.  In addition, the campuses became the first known schools to provide cardholders with the option to utilize their respective campus card (debit account) at vending machines on either campus as well as at any of the off/campus merchant partner locations.

The University of Houston (Houston, TX) becomes the first college/university to successfully integrate a MasterCard debit card with their campus ID card.  Higher One, Inc. (New Haven, CT) founded in 1999 as an on-line financial services company, combined a traditional campus card and an on-campus debit account with a MasterCard (debit) card account, a checking account, ATM checking access, and related web banking services.

2003

The University of Wisconsin-Stout (Menomonie, WI) becomes the second  college/university to successfully integrate a MasterCard debit card with their campus ID card with the assistance of Higher One, Inc. (New Haven, CT), an on-line financial services company.

2004

The University of Vermont (Burlington, VT) becomes the first known college or university to "share" its host campus card access system with two other "non-related" schools, Saint Michael's College (Burlington, VT) and Champlain College (Burlington, VT).

2005

Blackboard Inc. (Washington, D.C.) introduces its new Universal Edition™ Transaction System to complement its existing Unix™-based and Windows™-based platform campus card systems.

The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) celebrates its 30 th corporate anniversary.

The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) acquires Diebold Campus Card Systems (Canton, OH).

The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) acquires Student Advantage, LLC (Boston, MA). The membership program, which is vendor neutral, is the nation's largest student discount program enabling hundreds of thousands of students to make purchases at more than 20,000 locations less expensively around campus, nationally, and online. The "SA Cash" off-campus payment system was not included in the transaction, and remains part of RVS Ventures, Inc.

General Meters Corporation (Colorado Springs, CO) releases wireless door access readers to complement its existing wired door access readers.

The Colleges of the Fenway ™ (Boston, MA) launches the Fenway Card program at all 6 independent schools and becomes the first consortium to launch an integrated branded campus card program simultaneously (i.e., Emmanuel College, Massachusetts College of Art, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Wheelock College).

The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) releases it new OdysseyOne™ one-card cashless system designed specifically for small to mid-sized colleges and universities. Blackboard Inc. (Washington, D.C.) completes its merger with WebCT, Inc.

HID Global Corporation (Irvine, CA), a division of ASSA ABLOY (Stockholm, Sweden), acquires Fargo Electronics Inc., (Minneapolis, MN) a leading provider of card issuance systems.
