N.A.C.C.U. (National Association Of Campus Card Users) formed to provide an educational forum and resource for college and university campus card users. Founders included Mr. Tom Bell (SUNY Geneseo), Mr. Mel Blackburn (Loyola College in Maryland), Mr. Paul Melanson (Loyola College in Maryland), Mr. Bill Norwood (FSU Card Application Technology Center), and Mr. Joseph Pietrantoni (Duke University).
CapCard Inc. (Madison, WI), a consortium of credit unions with Mr. Peter D. Livingston serving as President, was incorporated to provide technical services and consulting for credit unions to develop strategic alliances with campuses and/or provide services associated with their all-purpose campus card.

Schlumberger, Ltd. (France) announces agreement to purchase DANYL Corporation (Moorestown, NJ) to form Schlumberger DANYL Inc.

National CacheCard Company (St. Louis, MO) develops and installs their first off-line "Campus CacheCard" System at Washington University (St. Louis, MO) utilizing multiple card technologies, including proprietary Smart Card technology. The primary magnetic stripe (on-line) provided school applications (i.e. meal plan, library access) while the chip (off-line proprietary 8 KByte "contact" type) provided school vending applications (i.e. beverage, snack, copiers) and two "stored-value"applications (i.e. bookstore, on/off-campus merchants). Students accounts are maintained by the vendor for the school in a trust account in a bank.
The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) and Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, MI) become the first universities to contract with a bank (i.e. First of America Bank Corporation) as an integrator to provide an electronic link to their campus card, utilizing magnetic stripe and Smart Card technologies. The Pennsylvania State University System becomes the first university to link their campus card with a consortium of multiple financial institutions (i.e. banks, credit unions), utilizing single magnetic stripe technology (high coercivity), with the Penn State Federal Credit Union responsible for processing all banking transactions.
The National College Registration Board (Princeton, NJ), a subsidiary of University Student Services Inc. (Philadelphia, PA), solicits 1.8 million high school seniors and college students across the U.S. for issuance of "The Campus Card". The mailings, promoted subscription ($25.00) to a national student identification card issued to all registered college students, implied requirement for college entry, touted discounts on campus-related purchases, and implied endorsement by several campus professional associations as well as many higher education institutions.
The University Of Delaware (Newark, DE) becomes the first university to link their campus card with a Savings & Loan financial institution (i.e. Wilmington Savings Fund Society), utilizing a single magnetic stripe (high coercivity). The "UD#1 Card" magnetic stripe (on-line) provides school applications (i.e. debit, meal plan, event access, door access, parking access, vending) and financial applications (i.e. ATM account access).
Northeastern University (Boston, MA) becomes the first university to offer three versions of a campus card, including a MasterCard logo (option) issued "on-site" by the university. The standard campus card is restricted to on-campus applications; the combination campus card and bank card provides on-campus applications and optional ATM access (i.e. BankBoston); the enhanced campus card and bank card provides on-campus applications, optional ATM access (i.e. BankBoston), and includes a MasterCard logo for worldwide retail applications. The "Husky Card" magnetic stripe (on-line) provides school applications (i.e. debit, meal plan, event access, door access, vending) and financial applications (i.e. ATM account access) while the bar code provides a library application.
In a joint venture, Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL), CyberMark LLC (Tallahassee, FL), and First USA, introduce a MasterCard (issued by First USA), which includes chip technology (off-line proprietary 1 KByte "contact" type), which can be utilized at concessions at the FSU Doak Cambell Stadium and at local merchants.

VersaComm, Inc. (Boston, MA), founded by former students of the University Of Massachusetts at Amherst, implements the "Swipe It Meal Card" as an independent off-campus "alternative" debit card in the Boston area (www.swipeit.com).
Debitek Holdings LLC (Chattanooga, TN), a provider of cashless payment systems (i.e. off-line) for corporate campuses, is purchased by IVI/Checkmate Corporation (Roswell, GA), a leading supplier of Point-Of-Sale (POS) terminals (utilizing magnetic stripe and smart card technologies), as a wholly owned subsidiary.

The University of Missouri - Columbia (Columbia, MO) becomes the first known college or university to "share" its host campus card access system with another school, Stephens College (Columbia, MO), a private institution. Initially, cards were produced by each campus (separately), cardholders were restricted to applications at their respective campuses, and no off/campus applications were utilized by either institution.
1999
National CacheCard Company (St. Louis, MO) and GTE Systems (St. Louis, MO) dissolve their strategic alliance (GTE SmartCollege) formed in 1997.
National CacheCard Company resumes marketing its Campus CacheCard (i.e. Smart Card access system) to college and universities.
Diebold Inc. (Canton, OH) releases its new "CS Gold" Card Access System at Pepperdine University (Malibu, CA). The system utilizes both magnetic stripe technology for "on-line" applications (e.g. food service, bookstore, privileges, door access, etc.) and chip technology (i.e. 1 KByte "contact" type) for "off-line" vending applications (e.g. beverage, snack, laundry, copiers).
University MealPass (Tampa, FL) implements the "University MealPass" Card as an independent off-campus "alternative" debit card to the campus card issued by the University Of South Florida (Tampa, FL).
NPD Associates / Roth Systems Inc. (Newtown Square, PA) introduce WinAmecs-Millennium system (i.e. Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, Unix).
The CBORD Group Inc. (Ithaca, NY) introduces the "OmniACCESS NT" System, which provided "Windows NT" network compatibility for card reader to host communications.
CapCard Inc. (Madison, WI), a consortium of credit unions founded by Mr. Peter D. Livingston in 1993, to provide technical services and consulting for credit unions to develop strategic alliances with campuses and/or provide services associated with their all-purpose campus card, is dissolved (i.e. all products and intellectual property transferred to Stark/Livingston Inc.).
DataCard Corporation (Minneapolis, MN) reorganizes three business units into separate companies, DataCard Worldwide (i.e. card personalization systems for financial institutions, retailers, loyalty marketers, service bureaus), Credentia (i.e.digital photo ID systems, smart cards, biometrics), and Med Assure (i.e. healthcare patient ID systems).
Schlumberger DANYL Inc. (Moorestown, NJ) changes name toSchlumberger Inc.
Special Teams / CEI (Brookings, SD) changes name of division to College Enterprises Card Systems.
