Most Institutions of Higher Education have issued plastic Campus Cards for decades - based on a 30-year business model.

A contemporary business model is a virtual Campus Card Program which includes tools for Advanced Technology, Increased Enrollment, Reduced Institution Costs, and Generational Expectations.

Now is the time for Administrators to consider moving to a new business model - more closely aligned to Student Preferences.

FUTURE-PROOFING ... Your Campus Card Operation

Strategic Questions Every Administrator Should Be Asking

Higher Education Administrators need to consider whether it is now time to shift their institutional resources from operating a 30-year old "Plastic Card Factory" to migration of a "virtual" campus card for their Mobile Millennial students ...

Ten (10) Strategic Questions for Administrators include:

1.  What if our campus card vendor is sold?

2.  Is proprietary vendor hardware a wise investment?

3.  Do we still need residence hall student laundry readers?

4.  Should we "leapfrog" to mobile campus card technology?

5.  Why are we still making and issuing plastic campus cards?

The Baby Boomer and Millennial generations have both changed the world and Higher Education.  The next generation is about to decide whether to attend class ... or just send their drone instead.

Is your institution well positioned to respond to these business infrastructure challenges and new campus marketing opportunities?

How Far Is Too Far For The University ID?

Liability Concerns For Institutions Issuing IDs

States are currently accepting everything from tribal identification to gun licenses, but they are still split with regards to the campus card.

As for the voter ID issue, Huber see this as more trouble than it is worth for colleges and universities. "Voter regulations vary between states and are subject to fluctuating political and court decisions.  This lack of standardization could result in costly and last-minute replacement of cards if rules change and the ID's use is required for this application."

Basic design of campus cards deserve careful operations and legal considerations.  Huber suggests colleges should avoid printing an Issue Date on a campus card as this could encourage fraudulent use.  Conversely, card validity should always be facilitated and documented electronically by the campus card system."

"Fraudsters often use these easier-to-acquire breeder documents to then apply for more secure IDs."

"There's a reason Social Security numbers [and birth dates] don't appear on Student ID's anymore.  The paper trail could lead back to the university."

"The simpler and perhaps safer option is to keep the student ID within the walls of the campus, leaving those use cases that reach beyond the institution's borders to other identity documents."
